BORNEOTRAVEL - SEKADAU: On December 11, 2024, the Keling Kumang Institute of Technology (ITKK) in Sekadau hosted a book discussion event focused on the research work titled ""Indeks Pembangunan Manusia (IPM)- Kabupaten Sekadau, Kalimantan Barat, Akar, Masalah, dan Intervensi untuk Meningkatkannya" - Human Development Index (HDI) - Sekadau District, West Kalimantan: Causes, Issues, and Interventions for Improvement.
This book was authored by four ITKK pensyarah (lecturers): Stefanus Masiun, Masri Sareb Putra Adil Bertus AS, and Laurensius Tobing. The research aimed to evaluate the current state of the HDI in Sekadau and suggest practical solutions to improve the quality of life for its residents.
Experts discuss solutions for Sekadau's development
During the event, experts from various institutions, including the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik - BPS) of Sekadau, Sekadau Hospital, the Health Department, and the Education Department, shared their insights.
The discussions generated valuable recommendations, focusing on critical sectors like education, healthcare, and the economy. Among the key suggestions were improving education quality in remote areas, ensuring equitable healthcare access, and strengthening local economies through more inclusive empowerment programs.
The book is intended to serve as a reference for local government and related organizations when formulating more effective and sustainable development policies for Sekadau. By implementing the practical solutions outlined in the book—such as improving educational access, healthcare services, and local economic development—the HDI in Sekadau is expected to see significant improvements. Additionally, the book aims to encourage collaboration between the government, the community, and stakeholders to achieve more inclusive development goals.
Overall, the book serves as an essential resource for advancing the welfare of Sekadau's residents and enhancing their quality of life through data-driven, needs-based policy-making.
Key Takeaways from the Book
In 2022, Sekadau District ranked 13th out of 14 districts/cities in West Kalimantan in terms of HDI. This low ranking reflects various challenges in human resource development, including limited access to quality education, inadequate healthcare facilities, and relatively low economic well-being.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), key HDI indicators in Sekadau, such as Life Expectancy (LE), Expected Years of Schooling (EYS), Mean Years of Schooling (MYS), and Per Capita Expenditure (PCE), have shown slight improvements, though modest. In 2023, LE increased slightly to 73.93 years, and both EYS and MYS also saw small improvements. The increase in per capita expenditure indicates some progress in the economic well-being of the population.
Despite these positive trends in health, education, and the economy, Sekadau's HDI only saw a small increase from 66.13 in 2022 to 66.83 in 2023. This slow growth highlights the need for more substantial efforts in education and economic sectors to enhance the quality of life.
This book seeks to better understand the challenges facing Sekadau District and to propose solutions to accelerate human resource development and improve the welfare of its people.
