Langsat Punggur: A Signature Fruit of West Kalimantan

Langsat Punggur
By Masri Sareb Putra

West Kalimantan is well known for its seasonal tropical fruits, and one that stands out is Langsat Punggur, a local variety of langsat scientifically known as Lansium parasiticum (also widely referred to as Lansium domesticum).

This fruit has built a strong reputation among locals for its naturally sweet taste, juicy flesh, and refreshing quality.

Each bite delivers a clean, honey-like sweetness, without any artificial aftertaste, making it a favorite during harvest season.

What makes Langsat Punggur special is its authenticity. The trees grow in village gardens and semi-forest areas, producing fruit that reflects the natural conditions of the land.

The taste is consistent: sweet, mild, and rich in juice. These qualities keep people coming back year after year.

Season Brings Abundance and Low Prices

The current harvest season, locally known as "musim", has brought an abundant supply of langsat to the market. With production peaking, prices have dropped significantly, making the fruit affordable for everyone.

At the moment, langsat is selling for as low as Rp10,000 per kilogram, a price that encourages bulk buying and wider consumption.

This seasonal drop is not seen as a loss by local farmers. Instead, it is understood as part of a natural cycle. Musi season is a time of plenty, when families enjoy the fruit at home, share it with neighbors, or sell it casually by the roadside. The low price reflects abundance, not low quality. In fact, the fruit is at its best during this time.

Langsat Everywhere in Pontianak, Grown Fully Naturally

During musi season, langsat markets appear almost everywhere in Pontianak. Vendors line major roads such as Gajah Mada Street, Jeruju, Ahmad Yani, and Yos Sudarso, selling freshly harvested fruit straight from local orchards. The sight of stacked langsat baskets has become a familiar marker of the season.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Langsat Punggur is how it is grown. The fruit is produced without chemical fertilizers or even organic fertilizers

The trees rely entirely on natural soil nutrients and rainfall. This hands-off approach not only preserves the original taste but also reflects a traditional way of farming that respects nature.

In an era of intensive agriculture, Langsat Punggur stands as a reminder that sometimes the best flavors come from letting nature do the work.

Simple, honest, and deeply rooted in local wisdom.
